Case Study: Laser Scanning of College Football Stadium

Location:
Bowling Green, Ohio

Intensity map point cloud of field

Task:
Provide 3D laser scanning and photo documentation of the existing condition of the college football stadium, seating and concrete steps prior to beginning construction work.

Challenge:
The client needed to quickly document the as-is condition of the stadium, seating and steps prior to commencement of work and did not want to delay the start of their project.

Solutions:
Within days of receiving a request, TruePoint Laser Scanning was able to mobilize to the site and laser scan the entire stadium. Utilizing the Leica ScanStation P20 Ultra-High Speed Scanner and on board camera TruePoint’s field technician captured a vast amount of data on the interior and exterior of the stadium in just a few days. Even as students and athletes utilized the field, TruePoint’s technician was able to continue laser scanning due to the scanner’s eye-safe laser class 1 rating.

Using advanced registration techniques TruePoint was able to tie multiple days of scanning together to have one comprehensive set of data. Additionally, because the field was comprised of artificial turf it was important to occupy those positions without damaging the field. Using additional equipment TruePoint was able to laser scan the field without puncturing the turf with the tripod legs.

Deliverables:
TruePoint Laser Scanning provided TruViews to the client, which can be utilized in order to virtually visit the site without the need for expensive software. Leica TruViews use an Internet Explorer plugin that allow the client to view and take simple measurements without having training or expert knowledge in laser scanning, AutoCAD or point clouds.

Added Value:
By utilizing laser scanning the client received a highly accurate and comprehensive view of the stadium and can easily navigate to various positions throughout the site quickly. Furthermore, because laser scanning is extremely comprehensive, the data set can be used again in the future for other projects.

Laser Scanning is an excellent way to document site conditions prior to commencement of major construction projects.
